Foam Roller/Stretching 101, by Nicole Kelly NASM CPT.

While we all know the benefits of working out consistently several times a week, most of us don’t realize the benefit of a high quality stretching regime. Stretching is one the best things you can do for your body before and after you work out. In addition to common stretching, using a foam roller is an excellent way to loosen up your body.

The day following a good workout, people typically experience muscle tightness and soreness. For that reason, some will only work out every other day or even skip several days to recover from the soreness. While recovery days can be helpful and necessary, taking several days off might be counterproductive to your fitness goals. Stretching can help you reach your goals by alleviating pain and tightness in your muscles. That’s why we decided to create a new class here at Body Systems called “Roll with It.”

We see a lot of people stretching hamstrings and quads, but they often overlook smaller muscle groups that can cause additional pain and discomfort. Stretching your hip flexors, calves, and your entire upper body will not only loosen you up, but also make you feel strong and energetic. Many times these muscles will be the ones causing the most nagging pain you feel after working out. Our new class focuses on getting to all these muscles and warding off the soreness that keeps you out of the gym.

Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) technique used by athletes and physical therapists to aid in recovery of muscles that are prone to being overactive. Fascia is the soft tissue portion of the connective tissue in the muscle that provides support and protection.

The new foam roller class is the perfect way to alleviate pain by elongating the stiff muscle fibers. While many people suffer from back pain and tightness, the roller is an easy way to massage your back. Our new class is promised to help you feel much better and become more energetic.

There’s a simple why reason coaches, athletes and personal trainers stress the importance of stretching. It works!!! So try our new foam roller class every Thursday night at 7:30p.m. and you’ll begin to see the amazing benefits.
